Rio de Janeiro is the second major city of Brazil, behind Sao Paolo, and is one of the most spectacular places on the planet. Even well-travelled individuals will love what this destination has to offer. Commonly known as just Rio, the city is nicknamed "The Marvellous City". It is famous for its spectacular natural setting, its Carnival celebrations, samba and other music as well as stunning beaches. The most well known and recognised landmark of Rio is the giant statue of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer, atop Corcovado Mountain, which has recently been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Other famous local landmarks include Sugarloaf Mountain with its cable car and Maracana stadium - as one of the world's most famous football stadiums a required pilgrimage for any true football (soccer) fan. Rio's natural harbour is surrounded by lush, high mountains that meet the sea in the world-famous and hotel-lined tourist beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, paved with decorated black and cream swirl pattern mosaics. Furthermore Rio boasts the two world's largest forests inside an urban area.
Rio is packed with bars and restaurants for every taste and budget just waiting to be discovered. And the nightlife is as legendary as the city's Carnival!
With around 6 million inhabitants, one of Rio's most precious resources is often overlooked: its people. Brazil is a melting pot of races, colours and creeds. No one race, colour or religion dominates Brazil. There is room for all and that includes the many visitors who come to Brazil each year from every corner of the planet. The inhabitants of Rio, called Cariocas, are known for being easy-going and friendly.
