Destination
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The sun-kissed emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the Cinderella story of the travel industry, having exploded from a sleepy fishing village into a futuristic metropolis which will host the World Expo 2020.
This dazzling desert kingdom is home the world’s tallest building – the 828m tall Burj Khalifa – as well as iconic modern structures such as the Dubai Opera House, that's shaped like a futuristic dhow.
Yet scratch beneath the shiny surface and you'll find another side to the ‘city of gold’. Alongside The Palm – three palm-shaped man made islands often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, as they can be seen from space – sit historical sites such as Bastakia and Dubai Creek. Here visitors can watch dhows (traditional Arab sailing boats) weave across the water as they have done for centuries.
Further local flavour can be found by strolling through the atmospheric souks (markets) or touring Jumeirah Mosque - Dubai's most beautiful mosque and the only one that welcomes non-Muslims, six days a week.
Factor in sandy beaches, intriguing deserts, luxurious hotels and super-sized shopping malls like the Dubai Mall that’s also home to an aquarium and Olympic sized ice rink - and visitors have a high end, safe destination in which to boost their Vitamin D.
