Queenstown's The Spire Hotel was voted Australasia's leading boutique hotel in the World Travel Awards.
Auckland-based Martin Hughes Architecture Interiors did the fitout.
Stewart Harris from the firm said he was inspired to create a contrast to the traditional lodge-styled accommodation prevalent in the district.
So he went for a New York-style theme, particularly in the bar and restaurant.
