Etihad Airways hopes a major growth initiative for 2010 will take it to profit in 2011, its chief executive said this week.

Speaking at the World Travel Awards, CEO James Hogan said the airline’s primary focus was to turn a profit in 2011.

“As we move into 2010, we intend to cement our place as the world’s best airline, opening up new routes, taking delivery of new aircraft, investing in new products in the air and on the ground, and introducing a range of online initiatives to make travelling with Etihad better than ever” he said.

“Our next growth phase will also position Etihad to reach its goal of profitability in 2011.

“This will be a key focus for us as we move forward with a programme of continuous investment in our network, our product, and in staff training and development”

The airline has also planned to introduce new Advanced Business and Economy Class seats and an in-flight entertainment system by the end of the year, Arabian Business reported.

At the World Travel Awards, Etihad won the award for Leading First Class and the world's top airline, making it become the first Middle East carrier to win the accolade.
