A hotel in Croatia has won four prestigious prizes at the spectacular World Travel Awards (WTA) ceremony - the tourist industry's answer to the Oscars. Le Meridien Lav in Split was victorious in the Europe's Leading Casino Resort category and took the title of Europe's Leading Conference Hotel.

It was also named the country's leading hotel and best spa resort.

The Hvar Yacht Harbour Hotel was named Croatia's Leading Boutique Hotel.

The results of the ceremony could suggest to many travellers that Croatia has a wide range of luxury accommodation to offer.

Indeed, only Turkey walked away with more awards.

Peter Loesch, general manager of Le Meridien Lav, said: "Our organisation is delighted to be recognised with this distinguished honour for the second year running and it is wonderful to be acknowledged for our consistent effort to deliver the most spectacular experience."

It was reported earlier this week that many luxury hotels could be cheaper than tourists expect.

The European Hotel Managers Association stated it believes top-class resorts will be unable to charge the same prices as in previous years.
