Giza Pyramids named 'world's leading attraction'

CAIRO: The World Travel Awards (WTA) named the Giza Pyramids as the “World’s Leading Attraction” of the year.

The 14th annual awards ceremony was held this past December at the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa in the Caribbean.

Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) Secretary General Zahi Hawass said the coveted award is like the Oscars of the tourism industry. He explained that 167,000 travel agencies, tour and transport companies, in addition to tourism organizations in 160 countries voted for the Giza Pyramids through the WTA website.

Sharm El-Sheikh was named the “World’s Leading Dive Destination,” with the Royal Savoy Sharm El-Sheikh named the “World’s Leading Diving Resort.”

Finally, the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh won the “World’s Leading All-Suite Hotel.”

The WTA was conceived in 1993 to recognize, reward and celebrate excellence in the global travel and tourism industry, with trophies awarded in over 1,000 categories.
