World Travel Awards comes to Mexico

11 September 2009 - London, England

Senior management and decision makers from The Americas’ travel & tourism industry will gather at the luxurious Hacienda Tres Rios in Mexico on September 21st, for an evening of inspiring stories and the highest calibre of corporate entertainment, as this year’s regional North & Central America World Travel Awards winners are revealed.

The World Travel Awards North & Central America regional ceremony will be staged in Southeastern Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula, gateway to the Mayan World. Mexico is a top tourism destination; in 2008, international tourist arrivals rose by 5.9% to 22.6 million while US dollar travel spending by all visitors rose 3.4% to US$13.3 billion.

There will be a star studded line up of entertainment to celebrate the winner’s achievements on this upbeat evening, bringing glitz and glamour to this already popular tourism destination. American group, KC and the Sunshine Band will headline the evening with disco classics including ‘That’s The Way I Like It’ and ‘Get Down Tonight’.

Actress and presenter Monica Sanchez and actor Jerardo Mungia will also take the stage during the evening.

The line up will also include performances from The Village People, who will be strutting their stuff on stage, with popular hits including ‘YMCA’ and ‘In the Navy’.

Throughout the evening, the names of those travel professionals and organisations who have gone that extra mile, even during these challenging economic times, will be announced. Winners in attendance will be presented with their prestigious World Travel Awards trophies by key industry figures. The benefits they will reap will continue long after the event with profile and commercial gains throughout the year.

Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways are competing for the coveted title of North America’s Leading Airline.

Ten of the most famous hotels are battling it out to become North America’s Leading Hotel – Burnham Hotel, Chicago; Four Seasons Hotel, Chicago; Jumeirah Essex House, New York; Mandarin Oriental, Miami; Parker Palm Springs, California; The Beverly Hills Hotel & Bungalows, California; The Mansion on Turtle Creek, Dallas; St. Regis Hotel, New York; The Westin Grand Bohemian, Miami and Trump International Hotel & Tower, New York are all in the running.

Graham Cooke, President, World Travel Awards, said that they had chosen to stage the spectacular awards at Hacienda Tres Ríos in Mexico for a number of reasons. “

“We are delighted to hold this year’s event in Mexico, one of the most popular international travel destinations that accounted for 13.2% of Mexico's GDP in 2008.

As the industry is aware, an estimated 40,000 additional jobs were created directly last year by Mexico's Travel & Tourism Industry, raising the total number of people employed in the sector to 1.7 million (according to the World Travel & Tourism Council); a fantastic achievement given the global economic situation.

“It seems fitting, therefore, to celebrate the North & Central Americas awards ceremony in this beautiful destination, which sets the bar for the global travel and tourism industry and creates hope for many young travel professionals.”

Mexican travel companies have come together to pledge their support for this important event with sponsorship from the Hacienda Tres Rios, RCI, Vive Mexico, Cancun Visitors & Convention Bureau, Yucatan Holidays and Yucatan.Travel.

“The World Travel Awards highlights the leaders in the tourism industry and we are honored to host this year’s gala event,” said Orlando Arroyo, CEO of Tres Ríos. “We are proud to showcase the successful balance of luxury and sustainable tourism at Hacienda Tres Ríos.”
