28 October 2011 - Caribarena Antigua

One of Antigua’s leading Sandals-operated resorts has been declared among the best in the Caribbean and the Americas, while the first “tourism pioneer award” was bestowed on Chairman and Founder Gordon Butch Stewart at the just-concluded World Travel Awards for the Caribbean and the Americas.

Stewart, who introduced the Sandals brand 20 years ago in Antigua, was hailed for his unwavering determination "to make tourism a force of real change and betterment throughout the Caribbean". The Sandals chairman was presented with the prestigious award by Graham Cooke, founder of the World Travel Awards.

Cooke shared with hundreds of guests at the awards banquet, held at Sandals Royal Caribbean Hotel in Montego Bay, Stewart's innovative achievements in tourism, starting from his acquisition of a struggling hotel in Montego Bay in 1981 to the creation of a brand that stretches across the Caribbean.

According to Cooke, Stewart's “passion for the Caribbean, creative leadership and commitment to quality" saw the Montego Bay property "transformed into a haven for two people in love, and today it remains the flagship of what has grown into the most successful all-inclusive brand in the world".

"His philosophy is simple - finding out what people want, giving it to them, and in doing so, exceeding their expectations," said Cooke, who noted that this year, Sandals is celebrating 30 years of pushing the boundaries of travel excellence.

The company, which operates two resorts locally, also received 11 awards, its highest amount ever at what industry experts regard as the Oscars of the Travel Industry. Sandals Grande Antigua was honoured with both the awards for the Caribbean's Leading Honeymoon Resort (2nd consecutive year) and Antigua & Barbuda's Leading Resort.

General Manager of Sandals Grande Antigua Gerald Christ believes the accolades are a true testament to the continued evolution of the Sandals brand and Antigua’s tourism product. “It is certainly a show of great confidence in the product of both Sandals resorts and the destination of Antigua by the international travel community. This would not have been possible without the hard-working Antiguan employees who day after day prove that they are among the best in the world,” said Christ.

The World Travel Awards were established in 1993 for the purpose of recognising and celebrating achievements in all areas of the world’s travel and tourism industry.
