The World Travel Awards (WTA), regarded as the most prestigious award in the travel and tourism industry, has unveiled regional nominees for 2011 awards, to be given away on 9 March 2011.

Voting has opened and the organisers of the awards urge both consumers and travel traders to submit their votes, so as to select the most deserving in the travel industry for each category.

Competition is fierce, where over 5,000 organisations across 160 countries will contend in over 900 categories. Contenders include leading tourist boards, airlines and luxury hotels from each region.

The regional award winners will go on to contend in the world categories, which will be announced in the end of September. Graham Cooke, Founder and President of WTA said “As tension surrounding the regional ceremonies builds, we are looking forward to revealing the leading players and tracking their progress as the head to our Grand Final 2011”.

The first of the regional award ceremonies will be held at The Armani Hotel in Dubai, where middle-eastern contenders will battle it out for the respective titles and accolades. This will be closely followed by ceremonies in Jamaica, Turkey (Antalya), Egypt and Thailand (Bangkok).

Year 2011 has seen a whopping 35% increase in self nominations for the competition compared to the previous year, as companies are becoming more cognizant of the global coverage and commercial benefits of receiving the prestigious the award.

In fact, they seem to have realised that consumers are more reliant on award winners, when it comes to choosing their ideal holiday destination. Thus, winning the WTA has become a key goal for travel chains and hotels.

“More companies than ever have put themselves forward for self nominations in 2011 and we have been equally overwhelmed by the number of multinational companies who have been spearheading their global marketing campaigns with their award victories.” Cooke said.

Since the global recession would also have hit travellers and their budgets severely, the rationality to choose a quality travel product is increasingly important to both businesses and travellers alike.

Cooke also said that the year 2010 has seen an increase in the number of leisure travellers relying onto award winners, as a guide or means of reassurance when it comes to choosing their holiday, which is the key reason for the competition getting more cut throat.

The World Travel Awards was established in the year 1993 in order to acknowledge and reward the excellence in the world’s travel and tourism industry. WTA is renowned as the most prestigious award in the industry, and votes are cast globally by professionals in the travel industry.

Self nominations for the award was extended earlier this year from 4 February 2011 to 19 February 2011, owing to the increasing demand. The grand finale is set to be held on 29 September 2011 in Thailand's capital, Bangkok.
