NATIONAL carrier Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) and local attraction, The Empire Hotel and Country Club are both nominated for the 17th World Travel Awards, voted by travel agents worldwide.

The website stated that RBA is nominated for "Asia's Leading Airline" while The Empire Hotel and Country Club is up for two awards, "Asia's Leading Beach Resort" and "Asia's Leading Resort".

The awards pegs RBA against other leading airlines in the region like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways, to name a few.

The Empire Hotel and Country Club, is going up against the likes of The St Regis Bali Resort, Shangri-La's Mactan Island Resort, Conrad Bali Resort & Spa, Four Seasons Resort Langkawi, Resorts World Genting and Banyan Tree Phuket.

Leah Benrimoj, public relations executive of the group in an email interview said that this year's World Travel Awards include a total of six regional events that take place in various locations across the globe.

"The winners for each regional event are announced live at each ceremony, with the victors progressing to the Grand Final taking place in London on November 7, 2010," she said.

The World Travel Awards website stated that there are three steps to the nomination process. The first being candidates for nomination are based upon the previous year's voting. Winner and four qualifying runners up of the previous voting will automatically qualify into the following years nominations.

"Step two, the nomination is open for the self-nominations for any organisations who wish to enter and lastly, the nominations are then vetted and inspected by a group of industry experts. Issues such as customer relations to creativity, quality of service, standards, guest satisfaction, product innovation and business acumen.will be included in this review. The stringent process of vetting and qualifying takes place throughout the course of each year," their website stated.

The nominations are decided in a timely manner, without bias or prejudice and the voting process is online which goes on for a year. The votes come from executives working within travel and tourism, but notably the majority are travel agents. In 2009 the voting has been open to the travelling public.Votes cast by travel agent voters count as two votes while the votes cast by non-industry voters count as one vote. All votes are internally audited to ensure the validity of each individual vote.

Since the World Travel Awards was introduced to the international travel and tourism scene 17 years ago, the organisation has been making steady and significant, long term impact. It has taken a global lead on one of the most important aspects of travel and tourism the quality customer experience. The Brunei Times
