The Westin Dragonara Resort was named Europe’s leading island resort, while the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz was named the Mediterranean’s leading hotel as the regional winners of the World Travel Awards were announced on Saturday night.

The Westin beat out competition from Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain to claim the award. It was also nominated for the Europe’s leading beach resort, Europe’s leading casino resort, Europe’s leading conference resort, Europe’s leading family resort, Mediterranean’s leading beach resort and Mediterranean’s leading resort.

The Kempinski, meanwhile, had also been nominated for the Europe’s leading luxury resort and Mediterranean leading resort categories, while the Fortina Spa Resort was nominated for Europe’s leading spa resort award.

The award categories also included 2 Malta-specific ones: Malta’s leading hotel and Malta’s leading spa resort. In the former category, the Corinthia Palace Hotel won, beating competition from the Hilton Malta, Hotel Ta’ Ċenċ, Intercontinental Malta, Palazzo Capua Sliema Malta, the Preluna Hotel and Spa and the Xara Palace.

The Kempinski won the Malta’s leading spa resort award, which was also contested by the Fortina, Le Meridien St Julians and the Barceló Riviera Resort and Spa.

The World Travel Awards’ regional awards precede the announcement of the world category winners, which will be made in London in a gala ceremony on November 8.
