Portugal Resident: Algarve beaches ready to welcome beachgoers

6 June 2020 - Portugal Resident

Algarve’s beaches are officially opening to the public tomorrow (June 6), the day Portugal’s bathing season begins.

“Our beaches are ready to welcome beachgoers, and it is everyone’s individual duty to follow the health and safety rules that are in place, including social distancing,” says Algarve tourism chief João Fernandes.

He believes that the region’s accolades – such as the 87 Blue Flags that its beaches were awarded last month – are evidence of its success as a “sun and beach” destination that is “safe, environmentally sustainable and accessible to all”.

These distinctions, he says, are “even more relevant as we emerge from lockdown and the Portuguese are again allowed to enjoy their favourite beaches where they can improve their physical health and mental wellbeing”.

On a closing note, the tourism boss stressed that the Algarve is once again in the running for ‘Best European Beach Destination’ in the World Travel Awards (click here), an accolade it has won six times before (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019). Voting is open to everyone until June 15.
