Asiana Airlines To Begin Flights To Lisbon From Seoul Next Month

18 September 2019 - Simply Flying

Asiana Airlines, the second-largest South Korean full-service airline, will begin flights from Seoul, Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) starting next month.

Following on from the success of its four times weekly non-stop flights to Barcelona that it inaugurated just over a year ago, the Korean carrier now wants to test the waters with service to Lisbon.

The direct Seoul to Lisbon flight is a first for a Korean airline and opens up the Far East to passengers looking to connect through Incheon International Airport.

Located on the same latitude as Tehran, Madrid, Washington and San Francisco, Seoul is ideally positioned for people looking to travel between Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.

According to website Airport Spotting Incheon International Airport already serves more domestic Japanese airports than either Tokyo Haneda (HND) or Narita International Airport (NRT). As such, Incheon International Airport is an important gateway for Japanese passengers looking to travel to Europe.

Asiana Airlines will fly twice a week to Lisbon

Asian Airlines will kick off its Seoul to Lisbon service on October 28th with two weekly flights between the South Korean and Portuguese capitals.

The twice-weekly flights will depart Incheon International Airport on Mondays and Wednesdays at 14:30 and will arrive at Lisbon’s Portela Airport at 18:50. The return leg back to South Korea will depart from Lisbon Portela Airport at 20:30 and arrive back in Seoul at 17:50 the following day.

So far Asiana Airlines only has the Seoul-Lisbon-Seoul route scheduled to fly until March 2020, but hopefully, it will prove to be a success and get extended. On the new route, Asiana Airways will be placing one of its nine Airbus A350-900s fitted out with 28 business and 36 Economy Smartium seats.

Smartium economy seating is only available on Asiana Airlines A350s and offers passengers not only four inches of extra legroom behind the business class cabin but access to Asiana’s business class lounge at Incheon International Airport.

Asiana Airlines business class service features 28 lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 configuration that allows all business class passengers direct aisle access. Just like the Smartium economy without the lounge access and extra legroom standard economy on Asiana Airlines A350 is made up of 247 seats in a 3-3-3 configuration.

For the third year in a row Lisbon, Portugal was voted the world’s leading destination city at the 2018 World Travel Awards a feat Asiana Airlines will be looking to build on as they market their newest destination.

To meet the growing demand Asiana Airlines plans to introduce temporary flights to Melbourne, Australia, and Cairo, Egypt starting in December 2019. When talking to the Korean Herald about the new Lisbon flights, a spokesperson for the airline said:

“With our latest launch of the new European route, we expect to increase our competitiveness as well as expand the flight network in Europe.”

While Lisbon has many long-haul flights between the America’s and Africa we think that the Asiana Airlines A350 flight to Seoul is currently the only non-stop flight between Lisbon and the Far East. If you know differently, please let us know in the comments.
