World Travel Awards announced for Americas

The leading destinations, operators and tourism brands in North and Central America were announced recently in one of the regional sections of the World Travel Awards.

At an event held in Orlando, Florida last week, the big winners included the Mexican city of Cancun, which was named Central America's leading beach location and also the region's leading destination.

Other winners in the Central America category included Juan Santamaria airport in San Jose, Costa Rica, which took the top airport award, and Marriott, which was named the region's leading hotel brand.

In the North America section of the 2008 World Travel Awards, the leading airline award was presented to American Airlines.

New York was arguably the biggest winner, taking the leading destination award, the best tourist board honour and the best airport accolade for John F Kennedy airport.

Miami was named the best cruise port and Royal Caribbean recognised as the best cruise line, while the Fairmont Chateau Whister in Canada took home the award for North America's leading ski resort.
