World Travel Awards Africa and Indian Ocean revealed

The winners include Table Mountain as the leading tourist attraction or the Maldives as the ultimate honeymoon destination

The world’s leading travel figureheads in Africa and the Indian Ocean were announced at the 26th annual awards. Mauritius’ Sugar Beach — A Sun Resort hosted the gala ceremony assembling the elite of the travel industry.

“Our inaugural ceremony in Mauritius has proved an incredible success. We have had the privilege of recognising the leading destinations, hotels, resorts, airlines and travel providers from across Africa and the Indian Ocean and my congratulations to each of our winners,” said Graham E. Cooke, founder of the WTA.

Mauritius’ minister of tourism, Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, said: “It was a big honour and a great privilege for Mauritius to host the WTA Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2019.”

The awards were first held in 1993 in order to “acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry,” according to the official website.

The annual ceremonies find recognition in their networking opportunities. Industry and government leaders, luminaries and media attend the WTA events every year.

Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa — these are just some of the African winners

The Diani Beach in Kenya won Africa’s Leading Beach Destination for this year. Diamonds La Gemma dell’Est in Zanzibar, Tanzania scored as Africa’s Leading Beach Resort.

If searching for the best city experience, Durban might be the place to go. The South African city won Africa’s Leading City Destination both last year and this year. However, when considering the overall experience, Kenya was chosen the continent’s leading destination.

Nature lovers should check out the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania as it won the award for leading national park in Africa. Aberdare Country Club in Kenya won Africa’s Leading Green Hotel for 2019. South Africa’s Table Mountain scored the title for Leading Tourist Attraction this year.

And for the romance seekers, the Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort in Mozambique excelled in the Africa’s Most Romantic Resort category this year. Azura Quilalea Private Island, also in Mozambique.

South Africa also won the Africa’s Leading Airport category. Cape Town International Airport became the best airport for three consecutive years. Ethiopian Airlines won Africa’s Leading Airline second year in a row.

Tropical island paradises are on top of the Indian Ocean’s list

The Maldives has been winning the Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination category consistently since 2013. The South Asian’s tropical nation has also been selected as the world’s best beach several times. Madagascar’s Andilana Beach Resort has won the title of the leading beach resort this year.

The East African island of Mauritius has clinched the title of Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination. It also became the definitive wedding destination for 2019. Alternatively, there is also the small island of Baros Maldives, which won the most romantic resort.

Green travellers can choose for example from the Seychelles, which won the Leading Sustainable Tourism Destination or the island of Reunion, which won the Leading Nature Destination category.
