The first World Travel Awards Africa Ceremony in partnership with the Durban International Convention Centre earlier this week saw South Africa winning several awards for Africa. “It was a wonderful evening for African tourism and hopefully an inspiration for all those nominated but who were unlucky enough not to win,” said Graham Cooke, President and Founder, World Travel Awards.

He said “We hope that the winners have set a supreme standard of professionalism in Africa with excellent examples of creativity and business acumen that can stimulate others to also raise their performance and their profile, not only within the African industry but worldwide.”

Opening the ceremony was His Majesty King Zwelithini Goodwill kaBhekuzulu, reigning King of the Zulu nation with 400 VIPs and leading figures in the crowd.
Receiving Africa’s Leading Destination was Cape Town with Club Travel taking Africa’s Leading Travel Agency Award.

Africa’s Leading Airline award was presented to South African Airways.
Arabella Western Cape Hotel & Spa received Africa’s Leading Family Resort award. Sun City Resort received Africa’s Leading Resort award.

Mount Nelson Hotel & Spa received Africa’s Leading Hotel whilst Sun International picked up the award for Africa’s Leading Hotel Brand.

Other South African overall continent winners included: Tambo International Airport, Africa’s Leading Airport; International Convention Centre, Durban, Africa’s Leading Conference Centre.

The winners were chosen by votes from executives in the travel and tourism industry.
