New Zealand caught the fancy of most when the first installment of Lord of the Rings took us to hobbit land. Since then they have managed to keep us and the rest of the world mesmerised.

Keeping in tune with this, New Zealand winning a tourism award comes as no surprise.

For the third consecutive year in 2012, Tourism New Zealand has been voted Australasia's leading tourist board at the World Travel Awards.

Already, 30,162 Indians have visited New Zealand in 2012. Unsurprisingly, there has been an 8.3 per cent increase over last year.

Explaining this trend is Vishal Suri, Deputy COO, Kuoni India. "New Zealand is a popular destination among honeymooners and those seeking self-drive itineraries.

Evolved free individual travellers, who prefer to do things their way, are also exploring New Zealand for its myriads of experiences.

New Zealand is a paradise for adventure sports enthusiasts and is also sought after by luxury Indian travelers," says Suri.

Adding on to this is Karan Anand, Head-relationships, Cox&Kings. "New Zealand has grown in popularity over the past 10 years.

This year there has been a 25 per cent increase in tourists heading there," points out Anand. His sentiment is echoed by Madhav Pai, Director, Thomas Cook.

"We have seen an increase of more than 25 per cent over last year. During the honeymoon season, we expect to see a surge," says Pai.

This is despite there being no direct flights from India to New Zealand - Indians must travel via Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Sydney.

"The flight options available today compared to a few years ago are an added advantage. Most airlines operate via a transit halt which gives travellers an opportunity for a stopover holiday enroute," explains Pai.

India is not even the tenth largest market for New Zealand. It is the twelfth. Despite this, the Kiwi nation is bullish about India because the average expenditure per person is around Rs 1,50,000.

And Indians stay for almost 15 days. The country has the perfect setting for romance - breathtaking gorges and lush green landscapes.

Make plans to head to this island country as you take it a notch up this year-end.
