Yorkshire has been named the UK's leading holiday destination, beating places like Cornwall and Scotland.

Welcome to Yorkshire also won a special award for Europe's leading marketing innovation at the World Travel Awards gala ceremony in Portugal.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "This is a great win for the great county.

"We have beaten whole countries to win the main award, places with bigger marketing budgets than us, and proved once again why Yorkshire is the best holiday destination in the UK.

"The win is testament to all the thousands of fantastic businesses we have in Yorkshire that time and again put the county on the map for millions of holidaymakers, not just in Britain, but the world over."
