Yorkshire has been named as the best holiday destination inside of the UK, yorkshirepost.co.uk reports.
The accolade, which was presented at the 19th World Travel Awards, named Yorkshire as the best destination for holidays in the UK. It beat stiff competition from other nominees: Cornwall, Cumbria, Devon, Northumberland, the Peak District, Scotland and Wales.
It was decided upon by travel agents from around the world, who looked at not only each area's popularity, but also what it offers tourists who make the journey.
Yorkshire is currently experiencing something of a boon in tourism, with figures suggesting the area has seen a 12 per cent increase in the number of international visitors making their way to the county during last year. This is thought to have helped generate a sizeable amount of money for the local economy, with tourists spending cash in the county on days out, car hire and locally-made products.
Promoters are also hoping to bring even more tourists again to the area in 2016, with a bid to host the opening stage of the Tour de France, which heads out to a foreign country every two years. Yorkshire faces stiff competition, however, with Barcelona, Berlin, Scotland and Venice all vying for the rights.
Speaking to telegraph.co.uk of the World Travel Award result, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, Gary Verity, enthused: "The win is testament to all the thousands of fantastic businesses we have in Yorkshire that time and again put the county on the map for millions of holidaymakers, not just in Britain but the world over."
