YORKSHIRE has been named the UK’s best holiday destination – ahead of other getaway favourites including Cornwall, Cumbria and Devon.

The county, home to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, received the accolade at the 19th World Travel awards after seeing a 12 per cent increase in international tourists last year and with 216million visits in total.

Here a famous TV chef born in Leeds reveals the secret of his county’s success.

I’M not surprised people are coming to Yorkshire — it’s called “God’s Own County” for a good reason.

Yorkshire is so vast that it has so much to offer.

When English people are abroad and get asked where they are from, they say: “England” — unless they are from Yorkshire and then they proudly say: “Yorkshire.”

And people know where they are talking about. For decades the county has been famous abroad because it has so, so much to offer.

There are not many places with great cities, a great coastline and great moorland within one county.

It is a country within a county. And tourists will get a warm welcome because Yorkshire folk are generally easy-going and chatty.

I go to see my family about six times a year and when I arrive back in Leeds I get a wonderful feeling, knowing I have reached my spiritual home.

I had the dreamiest of childhoods growing up there because you can live in the city but within a short drive you can be in the country. The Yorkshire Moors are fantastic — there are beautiful castles and ruins to visit and amazing climbing and caving in Malham.

It has amazing landscapes. It isn’t surprising that people have focused on the county when writing — it inspired the Bronte sisters.

Yorkshire has fantastic food and drink, too. It has world-famous tea but the pubs across the county sell fantastic pints with Black Sheep and John Smith’s bitters. There is something about going back there and eating world-famous foods such as Yorkshire puddings and fish and chips which makes it special, too.

Yorkshire gets better weather than Cumbria’s Lake District, which is another reason why people love it.

I’m not surprised it has global pulling power because some fantastic people have come from Yorkshire and many are known worldwide, such as artist Damien Hirst who grew up there People recognise it because of TV programmes and films such as Emmerdale and Calendar Girls which showed the amazing beauty of the county.

I am pleased it has received this accolade — I am proud to be a Yorkshireman.
