While Europe may no longer be the most exciting destination for travellers to invest in, there is one thing that sets it apart from many other continents: it has a wealth of historically rich and beautiful cities.

So, it was with great anticipation that the continent awaited the winner announcement of the World Travel Awards' "Europe's Leading City Break Destination" category.

Contenders for the coveted prize included destinations as diverse and romantic Venice, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Prague, and Paris.

However, perhaps still basking in its Olympic glory, London beat them all to it!

In the category of "Europe's Leading Airline," Lufthansa managed to outwit and outsmart airlines such as Air France, British Airways, KLM and TAP Portugal.

The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism was another notable winner as they scooped up "Europe's Leading Tourist Board."

WTA's Europe Ceremony 2012 was held at the new Conrad Algarve and marked the third leg of WTA's Grand Tour, a global search for the world's leading travel brands, which also includes regional heats in Dubai, Singapore, and Turks&Caicos. The winners of these legs will then go head-to-head at WTA's Grand

Final, which takes place at The Oberoi, Gurgaon, New Delhi, India, on December 12, 2012.
