World Travel Awards has honoured a few cities in the UK as being the best of the best. Edinburgh has been named Leading Destination in Europe, London has been named Leading City Breaks Destination in Europe and Yorkshire has been named Leading Holiday Destination in the UK.

To take Europe’s Leading Destination this year, Edinburgh had to beat popular cities like London, Barcelona and Paris. Andrew Burns, who leads Edinburgh City Council, said this was great news. This is a fantastic endorsement from the people who work in the travel industry. Edinburgh is a multi-award-winning city already, and this is further proof that it’s a world-class tourist destination with lots of history, great atmosphere and several world-renowned cultural events.

London had to beat competition from Madrid, Paris, Venic, Prague, and St Petersburg to be named Europe’s Leading City Breaks Destination. The Olympic Games left a great impression on the world and is sure to have helped the British capital win the coveted title. Some of the city’s travel companies also won awards, including: Sofitel London Heathrow as Europe’s Leading Airport Hotel; Dukes Hotel as Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel; ExCeL London as Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre; and The EDF Energy London Eye as Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction.

In the UK, destinations like Cumbria, Wales, Cornwall, Devon, Northumberland, Peak District and Scotland lost to Yorkshire for the United Kingdom’s Leading Holiday Destination award. In addition to this, Welcome to Yorkshire was honoured with Europe’s Award for Marketing Innovation for its work in promoting an industry that employs almost 250,000 people and is worth £7 billion. This is the fifth category that Welcome to Yorkshire has won at the World Travel Awards over the last three years – it won World’s Leading Marketing Campaign in 2010 and 2011 and Europe’s Leading Marketing Campaign in 2010.

This comes at an important time for the body, which missed vital funding due to the government’s move to begin allocating money to individual cities. Welcome to Yorkshire is lobbying for the Tour de France to be held in the county in 2014 and believes that it’s the only body that can work on tourism interests across the entire region. Yorkshire is visited by over 216 million people every year due to the hospitality and quality of attractions.

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity says that they have beaten entire countries and bigger places with larger marketing budgets to win this award. This has proven why Yorkshire is the best UK holiday destination. This victory is testament to the thousands of businesses in Yorkshire that put the county on the map again and again for millions of holidaymakers around the world. This award for Marketing Innovation shows the work they do on behalf of the tourism industry in Yorkshire to keep the county at the forefront of travellers’ minds. This is particularly important during such tough economic times like now.

The awards ceremony for Europe was the third regional event of the World Travel Awards and was held at Conrad, Algarve, Portugal. Algarve Promotion Bureau & Algarve Tourism Board president Antonio Pina said that it was with great pride that the city hosted such a prestigious event for the tourism industry. This was a unique chance to promote the region as a leading destination, with an excellent climate and exceptional facilities like no other country in Europe. They are grateful and delighted the World Travel Awards chose to hold such a memorable event in Algarve.
