Currently in its 19th year, World travel awards have grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious accolades in the global travel industry. The awards recognize excellence in travel and tourism, and aim to encourage world class competition that promotes innovation, thereby ensuring that travelers around the world receive exceptional value.

The awards celebrate leading tourism businesses in various world regions, as: Africa and Indian Ocean; Middle East; Europe; Asia & Australasia; Caribbean and the Americas. The winners from the regional competitions contest for the ‘World's leading' title in the grand final event which is the culmination of the annual World Travel Awards annual tour. The grand final gala this year is scheduled for 12th December, in New Delhi.

Kenya is honored to host World Travel Awards Africa and Indian Ocean gala for the 1st time this year. The gala is scheduled for 26th September; and will coincide with the Africa Hotel Investment forum, to be held on 25th- 26th September, and Kenya prides also in being the first sub Saharan nation to host this event. Key decision makers and leading personalities in the travel industry in the region and globally will be hosted in the country for these prestigious travel events; and this testifies to how far the country has come in transforming into a leading travel destination globally, and how far we may go.

While announcing Kenya will host the event this year, WTA organizers noted Nairobi is rapidly emerging into one of Africa's key hubs for business and leisure. Graham E. Cooke, president and founder, WTA says; "The selection of our hosts is fundamental to the success of our awards program and Nairobi posses all the ingredients to rise to the challenge of hosting our Africa and Indian ocean ceremony - a vibrant and progressive city brimming with opportunity." Local tourism and travel establishments have won a number of World Travel Awards (Africa and Indian Ocean) over the years; and we look to see more than a continuation of this - we would like an increase in the awards bagged by local establishments; and to challenge South Africa and Egypt who have traditionally dominated the winners list for the awards. Hosting the event this year also brings invaluable exposure for local businesses/establishments who have opportunity to not only participate in the event in future, but also raise standards so as to be equally competitive with their counterparts from the rest of Africa and Indian Ocean region.
