The World Travel Awards were set up in 1993 with the intention of rewarding excellence in the tourism sector.

Now in their 19th year, the annual prize giving is seen as a major honour for destinations and resorts that manage to scoop an accolade.

Tourism chiefs in South Africa will be delighted to see three of the country's most fascinating cities being lined up for one of the awards.

Indeed, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg have all been nominated for the Africa's Leading Destination gong - which is arguably the most sought after prize in the entire African section of the ceremony.

Each place is hugely popular among tourists taking luxury holidays in South Africa, as they are all very different.

Cape Town in particular is becoming accustomed to receiving awards, having been named World Design Capital for 2014 and last year Table Mountain was voted as one of the new Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
