East Midlands world's most eco-friendly airport
East Midlands Airport has been named the most eco-friendly airport in the world.
Special note was made of the airport's plans to be carbon neutral by 2012, its new environmentally friendly pier which contains ground heating pumps, wind catchers and water recycling facilities, as well as its plans to install wind turbines to generate 10 per cent of on-site electricity.
Penny Coates, managing director of East Midlands Airport, said: "Winning World’s Leading Eco Friendly Airport not only puts us on the map with the world but it also highlights the East Midlands region as a whole and it is something that everyone should be proud of."
Airports in the same category as East Midlands Airport were Berlin Tegal, Indianapolis, Kansai International and Narita International.
