DECKED out in a suit and bow tie at the peak of the beautiful Roseberry Topping, James Gildroy popped the question to his girlfriend of two years.

But unbeknown to James, he had just asked his now fiancee to marry him at one of the most romantic places in the world.

Because alongside exotic and far-flung places in the top 10, Roseberry Topping has been voted sixth most romantic place to propose on the planet in the World Travel Awards.

It is now keeping company with the likes of the Taj Mahal in India, Iguazu Falls in Argentina, and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

James, 30, who popped the question to Hannah Fitzhugh on March 1, said: “Roseberry Topping is a beautiful place. I thought if I proposed there we would be able to go back every year to celebrate.”

But they are not the first to fall for the stunning slopes of the Teesside landmark. Iron Age folk called it home and the signs of settlement can still be found nearby.

Its name stems from its Viking title Odins Toppen - or Odin’s Hill, Odin being a Viking god. Its jagged summit was originally much smoother and more symmetrical - but a landslide caused by a geological fault reshaped it in 1914.

Ever since, it’s been a much-loved part of our region as well as being a unique place to pop the question.
