It comes around just once every four years and anyone whose birthday falls on February 29th will know just how special that date feels.

So with a Leap Day on the calendar this week, the World Travel Awards has compiled a list of the most romantic destinations which range from offbeat to exotic as well as closer to home, where ladies might want to pop that life-changing question against a backdrop of stunning scenery.

The World Travel Awards included Lewa Downes in Kenya on their shortlist because it was made famous by Prince William who proposed to Kate Middleton while they were holidaying there.

For lovebirds who’ve left it to the very last minute, there’s always Paris by Eurostar (best spot – the top of the Eiffel Tower, followed by dinner at a candle lit brasserie) or Bruges, Belgium’s most picturesque chocolate box town. The most romantic spot? The bridge on Bruges’ famous Lake of Love.

There’s still just enough time to nominate and vote for the best travel organisations in the world (categories include airlines, hotels and more) and the official nominees list will be announced in early March. February 29th is the deadline for entries.

Last year’s winners included many leading five-star hotel brands that run successful shared ownership resorts and vacation clubs, among them Hilton, Ritz-Carlton, Starwood and Radisson.
