South Africa was named the world’s leading sports tourism destination at the recent World Travel Awards in Dohar, Qatar.

The World Travel Awards, held on 11 January 2012, are a highlight on the international tourism industry’s calendar, and this year the awards paid tribute to the hard work and commitment that went into making South Africa a world-class sports and events destination.

“This accolade certainly gives impetus to our strategy of growing South Africa's sports tourism offering for the global market,” said Roshene Singh, chief marketing officer at South African Tourism.

The 2011 Sports and Events Tourism Exchange, held in Cape Town, provided a platform for all significant bodies in both sports and tourism to come together to discuss ideas and plans regarding the future of sports tourism in the country. The work done at this event has started to bear fruit, such as the international recognition at the recent World Travel Awards.

“Globally, sports tourism is a multibillion-dollar industry, and with South Africa’s proven capability of hosting major events, as well as our significant infrastructure footprint, it makes sense that we start pursuing sports tourism as a viable route towards achieving our tourism goals,” Singh said.

“The FIFA World Cup was a major boost for South Africa’s international reputation, but it is important to note that hosting ongoing sustainable events across all sporting codes in South Africa is equally important for us to drive future tourism and economic growth.”

South Africa is a nation of sports-lovers, and with its fantastic climate, top-class sports facilities and superb tourism infrastructure, it makes sense for the local industry to focus on the lucrative sports tourism market.

There was also other recognition for South Africa at the awards: Thanda Luxury Safari Lodge for World’s Leading Luxury Lodge; Shamwari Private Game Reserve for World’s Leading Conservation Company; the Saxon Boutique Hotel for World’s Leading Boutique Hotel; and the Blue Train for World’s Leading Luxury Train.

The 2011 World Tourism Awards featured more than 5 000 companies in 1 000 categories and were attended by more than 3 000 guests from 92 countries. The awards were established 19 years ago and are recognised globally as the highest accolade in travel and tourism. They aim to raise the standards of customer service and business performance throughout the tourism industry.
