The World Travel Awards 2011 were announced in Doha, Qatar recently; and India earned great kudos at the awards.

First off, India was declared World's Leading Destination 2011, beating competition from places Bora Bora (French Polynesia), Cancun (Mexico), Istanbul (Turkey) and the Caribbean island of Jamaica.

Also scooping up an award was The Oberoi, Gurgaon, which won the gong for World's Leading Luxury Hotel. The Oberoi in Gurgaon, which opened in April 2011, is spread over nine acres and features serene water bodies, a forested driveway and landscaped greens. Other unique features include luxurious suites with private heated pools, Delhi's first 24-hour spa and an exclusive cigar lounge.

Jaipur's Raj Palace, a regular winner at the World Travel Awards, picked up the World's Leading Heritage Hotel 2011 award. The former royal residence is an only suites boutique hotel that showcases the glamorous lifestyles of India's former maharajs. When not busy at the spa, an exclusive cinema, pool or decorative gardens, guests can look up rare artifacts including the biggest crystal chandelier, Oriental rugs and an antique crockery museum.
