East Midlands Airport has won the title of World's Leading Eco-Friendly Airport. The accolade comes from the World Travel Awards, which celebrate organisations that make the greatest contribution to global tourism.
Airports in the same category as EMA were Berlin Tegal, Indianapolis, and Japan's Kansai International and Narita International. EMA was recognised for initiatives including aims to be carbon neutral by 2012 and plans to install four wind turbines on site to generate 10 per cent of the electricity consumed by the airport.
Penny Coates, managing director of EMA, said she was thrilled with the award. "I am absolutely thrilled that our hard work and dedication has been widely acknowledged by the World Travel Awards.
"Winning World's Leading Eco-Friendly Airport not only puts us on the map with the world but it also highlights the East Midlands region as a whole and is something that everyone should be proud of."
Neil Robinson, environment and safeguarding manager at EMA, said: "Winning this award is wonderful recognition of our environment work that we have completed." He said that in addition to the wind turbines and a recycling facility at the airport, the toilets in the building used rain water for flushing and low energy light fittings had also been installed.
