For the fifth consecutive year Jamaica copped the coveted Leading Caribbean Destination award, while taking home 15 additional sectional prizes at the World Travel Awards on Friday night.

In a sweeping victory, dubbed 'Jamaica's Night at Tourism's Oscars', the island kept the rest of the region at bay claiming, for the fourth consecutive year, the Caribbean's Leading Tourist Board.

In the ceremony at the Sandals Whitehouse European Village and Spa in Westmoreland, Jamaica was also crowned the Caribbean's Leading Cruise Destination, Caribbean's Leading Cruise Port (Reynold's Pier, Ocho Rios), Caribbean's Leading Airport (Sangster International Airport) and Caribbean's Leading Meetings & Conference Centre (Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston).

Sandals Resorts was also victorious, taking away no fewer than nine awards. Trophies included 'Caribbean's Leading Honeymoon Resort' for Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa, 'Bahamas Leading Spa Resort' for Sandals Emerald Bay Great Exuma, Bahamas as well as the 'Caribbean's Leading Hotel Brand' for Sandals Resorts International.

According to World Travel Awards organisers, thousands voted to select the winners. The voters included industry professionals and consumers worldwide, who have been voting online.

Graham E. Cooke, founder and president of World Travel Awards, said: "The level of competition here in the Caribbean has been exceptional."

According to Cooke: "Jamaica, in particular, has proved the rock of Caribbean tourism. By grasping new markets, new investment and new partnerships, the island has created a new form of tourism architecture that thrives come good times or bad."
