Brazil cleaned up most of the plaudits for South America winning the Leading Hotel, for the Copacabana Palace, Leading Travel Agency went to Discovery Brazil and TAM Airlines won the Best South American Airlines category. Over to Asia and Malaysia Airlines won Best Asian Airline while India walked away with two winning trophies: one for the Leading destination and Trident Gurgaon Hotel took first place in Leading Hotel in Asia.
Back to the Caribbean and Jamaica left the awards night with a smile or two after Air Jamaica picked up Leading Airline in the region and the country itself picked up the Leading Destination. Virgin Holidays collected the Leading Tour Operator in the area and Trafalgar Travel was the Best Travel Agency.
The World Travel Awards are taken by many in the industry as the Oscars are by the Hollywood stars. It is a launching platform for many and receiving an award is a great achievement and usually means a growth in business. The awards this year are particularly important as it has been hard for the travel industry to keep going as slow down in travel happened once the recession took hold. Now, hopefully we can all look to the future and have a bright one.
