9 July 2012 - Tourist Lead

More than two decades after the fall oh the Iron Curtain, Russia, Croatia and the Czech Republic are now major powers in tourism in the former Communist bloc. At least this is what we can conclude from reviewing the nominations in this year’s World Travel Awards Europe, the Oscar equivalent in tourism. However, the countries of “New Europe” are very far from the Western continent, which clearly dominates all the 59 categories of awards.

Russia accounted for 18 nominations, Croatia, 12, and the Czech Republic, 9. The remaining ex-socialist countries are far away, unable to accumulate any more than three nominations. Romania, Slovenia, Moldova, Latvia, Armenia, Serbia and Macedonia, among the countries absent from the nominations. However, a tourism product that is related to Romania is among the possible winners. It is a luxury train passing through Romania, but operated by a British company.

Hungary was nominated for “Best Luxury Business Hotel” (Hotel Corinthia, Budapest), Ukraine “Best” (Donbass Palace in Donetsk) and “Best New” (Fairmont Grand Hotel, Kiev). Bulgarians have been nominated twice for “Best Resort Course” (Lighthouse and Thracian Cliffs), but also for “Best Wellness” (Hotel Yastrebets)

Cities at the same level are Sankt Petersburg, Prague, Moscow and Dubrovnik, with six nominations. Otherwise, except for Split, no city in the former communist area received more than one nomination.

St. Petersburg is nominated in the categories “Best City Break Destination”, “The best cruise destination”, “Best cruise port”, “best destination”, “Best” (Grand Hotel Europe ) and “best presidential suite” (Grand Hotel Europe, Presidential Suite).

Prague is nominated for “Best City Break Destination”, “best destination”, “Best Business” (Boscolo Carlo IV), “Best Urban” (Boscolo Carlo IV) and twice for “Best Boutique Hotel” (Hotel Adria and Hotel Josef).

Dubrovnik has received as many nominations as St. Petersburg and Prague, but four of them actually belong to a luxury tourist complex. City on the Dalmatian coast is referred to the awards for ‘Best Cruise Destination “,” best destination “,” Best “(Dubrovnik Palace Hotel),” The best conference hotel “(Dubrovnik Palace Hotel), “The best presidential suite” (Dubrovnik Palace Hotel) and “Best Resort” (Dubrovnik Palace Hotel).

Moscow stands out as a haven of tourism business, appearing twice in the category “Best Business” (Baltschug Kempinski Hotel and Swissotel Krasnye Holmy) and also twice in the category “Best luxury business hotel” (Baltschug Kempinski Hotel and Hotel Radisson Royal) but is also nominated for best urban hotel (Swissotel Krasnye Holmy) and “Best City Break Destination”.

Winners will be announced on 6 October, the gala will be held at Conrad Hotel in Quinta do Lago Algarve, Portugal.
