You may have been too busy watching the People’s Choice Awards to notice that on the same night the World Travel Awards were being handed out.
I admit that the travel awards are a lot less glamourous and don’t feature nearly the same number of celebrities, but if you are interested in experiencing the best in travel, then it’s worth noting some of the winners.
You can check out the awards website for a complete rundown. The first thing you will notice is the lack of Canadian names on the list. No Canadian company won any of the airline awards. Nor did they win any of the hotel, spa, car rental, resort or any other awards.
The biggest winners seemed to be from the Middle East. Etihad Airways won multiple awards as did Qatar Airways. Several hotels and resorts in Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates were also prominent among the winners list.
I was interested to see what countries won the best destination awards. The best overall destination went to India. I certainly wouldn’t argue with that choice, but I’m sure you could make a case for a lot of other places. The same goes for the best island destination which was Mauritius. Jamaica got top nod for best honeymoon destination and the most romantic destination was the Maldives.
A lot of those are exotic destinations for Canadians, but the awards did recognize some things that are a little closer and more accessible for the rest of us. For example, the award for world’s leading theme resort went to Universal Orlando in Florida and Beaches resorts won the prize for best family all-inclusive.
Now that those are out of the way, we can look forward to the Oscars.
