American Airlines Named North America's Leading Airline at 2008 World Travel Awards
American Airlines has been named "North America's Leading Airline" at the 2008 World Travel Awards, a travel industry award program that has been described by the Wall Street Journal as the "Oscars of the Travel Industry."
American received the designation this past weekend during a gala for North and Central America winners held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. Nearly 170,000 travel professionals around the world were solicited for their input, with their votes determining the winner.
In 2007, travel professionals at the World Travel Awards selected American Airlines as offering the world's leading Economy Class product. American is a founding member of the global oneworld(R) Alliance, itself named the world's leading airline alliance for the fifth consecutive year at last year's World Travel Awards.
"American is honored to once again be recognized by travel industry experts," said Dan Garton, American's Executive Vice President - Marketing. "Employees at every level of our company work hard to consistently provide passengers with a positive travel experience, so it's especially gratifying when our efforts are acknowledged by some of the most knowledgeable travelers around."
Travelers can continue to look to American Airlines for leadership in air travel. Last month, American became the first U.S. airline to offer its customers inflight Internet connectivity, debuting the service on its fleet of Boeing 767-200 aircraft, which are used on nonstop flights between New York-Los Angeles, New York-San Francisco and New York-Miami. The service is being offered over a three- to six-month trial period, and if successful, could be extended to other aircraft and routes in North America.
This past June, American became the first U.S. airline to offer nonstop service from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport when it started Boeing 777 flights to Russia's political and economic capital.
And in March of this year, American became the first major airline to offer an application on Facebook(R), the popular social networking site, for users to contribute and access travel-related content. The application, called "Travel Bag," also offers a convenient link to American's award-winning Web site, AA.com.
"Being named North America's Leading Airline is wonderful recognition," said Garton. "American Airlines will continue to enhance its products and services to ensure that we stay on top with travel professionals and with our customers."
