Portuguese resorts, cities and companies have received a total of 26 nominations for this year’s World Travel Awards, with the Europe Gala Ceremony being held at the brand new Conrad Algarve hotel in Quinta do Lago on 6 October, prior to its official opening.

National airline TAP Portugal has been nominated for both Europe’s Leading Airline and Europe’s Leading Airline Business Class, with Lisbon being nominated for Europe’s Leading Airport.

The national tourist board ‘Turismo de Portugal’ has also been nominated for Europe’s Leading Tourist Board.

Portugal’s Algarve region has a total of 10 nominations. These include; Dona Ana beach in Lagos being nominated for Europe’s Leading Beach Destination and Hotel Quinta da Bela Vista, Portugal and Vila Joya, Portugal which are both nominated for Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel. Vila Joya is also nominated in the separate category of Europe’s leading Boutique Resort.

The Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Resort Hotel near Vilamoura has been nominated for Europe’s Leading Meetings And Conference Resort, the Sheraton Algarve Hotel in Albufeira for Europe’s leading resort and the Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel in Sagres for Europe’s Leading Villa Resort.

Europe’s Leading Golf Resort includes nominees Dona Filipa & San Lorenzo Golf Resort, and the Hotel Quinta do Lago, while Da Balaia Club Med is nominated for Europe’s Leading All Inclusive Resort, all of which are in the Algarve.

Portugal’s capital city is also well represented in this year’s list, being nominated in four categories; Europe’s Leading City Break Destination, Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination, Europe’s Leading Cruise Port and Europe’s Leading Destination.

Meanwhile, the island of Madeira also features heavily on the list, with Funchal’s Choupana Hills Resort being nominated for four awards including; Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel, Europe’s Leading Boutique Resort and Europe’s Leading Green Hotel.

It also shares nominations with Madeira’s Reid’s Palace for Europe’s Leading Island Resort.

Madeira’s The Vine Hotel is nominated for Europe’s Leading Design Hotel while the Portugal & Pestana Porto Santo Beach Resort & Spa is also nominated for Europe’s Leading All Inclusive Resort.

The World Travel Awards are considered the ‘Oscars’ of tourism.

The Grand Final of this year’s World Travel Awards ceremony will be held at the Oberoi Gurgaon in New Delhi, India on 12 December.
